RegenAqua is rolling out a new and innovative technology for nutrient reduction in treated wastewater. Their process uses macroalgae to further treat secondary treated wastewater from existing or new Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs). The nutrient reduction process is carried out in High Rate Algal Ponds (HRAPs) and produces tertiary treated wastewater with nutrient levels well below the upper limits allowed for disposal to the environment.

The efficacy of the algal treatment process is impacted by several factors which require monitoring, including Influent Flow, Nutrients, pH, Temperature, Turbidity, Water Depth and Solar Radiation. In addition, performance on a pond-by- pond and overall plant basis must be tracked and reported, at varying intervals and in different formats.

RegenAqua management required a data management, visualisation and analytics package that would accept data from numerous sources, and provide meaningful information to operators, management, customers, and regulators in contextually curated formats and at different timescales. The data-to-information package must be robust, reliable and highly flexible.

Following a lengthy assessment process, RegenAqua chose Information Engine for its ability to meet all requirements and for its attractive and intuitive user interface. System configuration is simple and can be scaled incrementally as required to accommodate challenging requirements and an expanding portfolio of operating plants.

  • Simple Implementation
    • Information Engine was implemented at Regen Aqua’s demonstration facility at Picton, NSW. Pre-integrated sensors and a customised SCADA connection, both using the mobile phone network, resulted in a smooth startup. IE’s simple, intuitive interface required minimal training for RegenAqua operators and managers.
  • Reliable Operation
    • The system has run for more than 12 months and has experienced minimal downtime, other than a recent outage caused by maintenance work on nearby cell towers. Because of the internal data logging features, no data was lost during this downtime, and was quickly caught up once connectivity was restored.
  • Flexible and Scalable
    • IE easily accommodates additional sensors and a wide variety of data sources, and configurations can be changed as user requirements change. RegenAqua’s second facility, currently under construction, will be added as a second site on their IE instance, enabling inter-site performance comparisons and tracking at the push of a button.

What clients say about D2K

“AlgaeWatch™ and the D2K team have allowed us to completely review and refocus the way we manage algal risks. Once a laborious process, information is now generated in a timely manner and format. The easy-to-use interface and predictive information, allow us to rapidly respond to and scan algal trends and future plan, a real step-change for us.”
